The staff of the technical department are experienced individuals in the fields of technology that are pertinent to the operations of Plastomer: polyurethane flexible foam manufacturing, pressure sensitive adhesive product formulating, laminating adhesive processing, and other polymeric material and physical testing applications. There is a combined tenure of experience in these disciplines that totals over 50 years among just the members of this one department. These individuals possess degrees in technical areas such as: chemical engineering, chemistry, analytical chemistry, and mechanical engineering. Due to the lengthy tenure of experience that the technical personnel possess, affiliations with various trade associations have been established over the years. Some of these trade associations are:
Our president Walter P. Baughman III, is a past president of the Polyurethane Foam Association; and, our founders, Walter and George Baughman, received Lifetime Achievement awards for their contribution to flexible polyurethane development. These were awarded in January 1998 by the University of Detroit Mercy Polymer Division headed by noted industry icon, Dr. Kurt Frisch.
Some of the previous accreditations Plastomer's on-site laboratory has been awarded are self certification at Visteon, the GP-10 from General Motors, and PQE Status from Valeo. Independent correlation studies are periodically conducted with Customer Central Laboratories and the Quality Control Labs at production facilities. We are also QS-9000 & ISO-9001 certified and registered. Our lab is capable of running test criteria that can project the anticipated usable life-span of various components in use. These tests include diversified accelerated aging protocols and environmental cycling methodologies.
Some of the primary functions of the Technical Department are:
As a result of the close link between the Marketing / Sales department and the Technical Department, the new material needs of any particular customer are very quickly communicated and evaluated to determine applicability and our ability to either produce or develop as an R & D project.
Our physical testing equipment and laboratory are capable of testing to most automotive specifications.
Due to the depth of experience of the technical staff, the various manufacturing processes here are continuously improved and redesigned if necessary to maintain predictable product quality characteristics.
The technical department is responsible for routine physical property testing of both in-process and final products which allows close interaction with all phases of the manufacturing process. |
