A critical component of a die cut product is the pressure sensitive adhesive backing that allows the customer to apply it to their assembly. An inferior adhesive negates the quality of the foam and exposes the customer to needless quality issues and assembly inefficiencies. Plastomer Sales Engineers know how to assist customers in the selection of the most appropriate and economical PSA backing to use.
Among the many types of Pressure sensitive adhesives in the marketplace, there are two primary methods of supplying an adhesive backed part, "supported" or "unsupported".
"Supported" PSA backing incorporates the flexible foam, a polyester half mil film carrier that supports the PSA, a permanent adhesive that bonds the foam to the carrier, the PSA and a suitable, slick-coated release paper liner that protects the adhesive prior to assembly at the customer facility.

"Unsupported" (direct coat) PSA does not utilize the polyester carrier. The adhesive is applied directly to the foam material then protected by the same type of paper release liner.

Plastomer compounds its own PSA's internally at our facility. The PSAs we compound are acrylic, water based formulations so as to produce environmentally friendly adhesive backed parts. For those applications that have difficulty with bonding, such as adhering to extremely curved or irregular surfaces, we provide Hi-Tack adhesives. Internal compounding allows us to control the quality of the entire PSA package to ensure a maximum service response for short lead times and JIT scheduling. |
